Dread Change Rooms? Try these 3 Things…

1. Think about the ‘change room’ as a ‘possibility pod’ (SAY WHAA?!)…

They ain’t called ‘change’ rooms for nothing. Instead of spending the rest of your life seeing change rooms as a place of dread (ain’t nobody got time for that)…how about referring to them as possibility pods (yes, I came up with that great name myself)! Possibility pods are where transformations are made!

As a Personal Stylist, I encourage my clients to view change rooms as a safe space where they can experiment and TRY different looks – no pressure, just a place that gives you the opportunity to create a style that you love. So the next time you’re in a clothing store, I encourage you to think about the change rooms in this way. You’ll end up having a more successful (and less stressful) shop!

2. Check in with good old Lady Resistance and tell her to BUGGER OFF…

If you want to wear something different to what you’d normally wear, but freak out every time you walk into a change room to try it on – please repeat to yourself: I AM NOT ALONE! Our resistance to style change is the same as the feeling of resistance we get when things change in our jobs, families and lives. It’s normal to feel a sense of resistance towards change, us humans are creatures of habit. Luckily, there are ways to overcome this resistance!

One way is to ask yourself what the reason is behind your resistance? If you pickup an item and then freak out and immediately place it back on the hanger before trying it on, ask yourself: why am I resisting this? Deep down I want to try it on, but am I worried about what other people will think? Is it because I don’t think I can pull it off? Does it remind me of someone or something that I’m trying to let go of?

Once you figure out why you’re resistant towards this new way of dressing, it will become easier for you to determine whether or not you want to make a conscious decision to move forward and not let this resistance prevent you from trying on and wearing items that you would really love and feel amazing in!

3. Remember, where your focus goes is where your energy flows…

This is not only relevant for your life in general, but also when it comes to your perception of your body and what you wear. If you always focus on the parts of your body that you aren’t as fond of or dislike, you are then more likely to take clothing items into the change room that are focused around hiding what you don’t like. Then all your energy goes towards thinking about those areas and that’s when emotions like anger, sadness and frustration may start to creep in – hence the change room dread.

If instead you choose to shift your focus toward highlighting those parts of your body that you like or love, you are then more likely to dress in a way that highlights your attributes and makes you feel good about yourself. When you do this, your thoughts are likely to be more positive and your energy and emotions will shift towards a more loving and pleasant way of being. So the next time you’re in a change room, shift your focus to those parts of your body that you do like, and work towards creating looks that attract your attention to those areas!

if you find it hard to think of a part of your body that you love or like, don’t worry, you don’t need to start off big. It could be as simple as saying to yourself, “I really like my arms” or “I have a nice neckline”. Focus on those aspects that you do like and you’ll notice that you’ll start to worry less about those areas that you aren’t as joyous about!
